DARK CHERRY CACAO SMOOTHIE

Updated: Oct 22, 2020

This week I've been v into cooking. It has been such a great outlet for me, plus I've started getting better at some of my favorite Indian dishes, which I'm really proud about! Celebrating the little wins is always necessary! I usually prefer cooking with other people (especially my mom and mother-in-law who are both amazing chefs!) but when I am by myself, it gives me time to listen to audio books, podcasts, live stream video interviews, etc. which I have been soaking up this week. I figured I'd share a few of them with you!

he Doctor's Pharmacy with Dr. Mark Hyman - for ALL things health related. He is so knowledgeable and breaks the information down so well.

The Balanced Blonde//Soul on Fire - for all things spiritual; meditation, manifesting, astrology, human design, etc.

Balanced Bites with Diane Filippo - another health podcast which stopped in 2019, but she is a fellow Bauman College alum AND is opening a health food store on Union St. for all my SF people. Make sure to check her out on Instagram.

Dr. Joelene Brighten - for all things women's health; birth control, PCOS, pregnancy, miscarriages, sex, etc. You can find her as a guest on many podcasts including the ones above. She is very active on Instagram with live stream videos and her book Beyond the Pill is a must read for all females.

Pelvic Pain Doc - Dr. Sonia Bahlani - I JUST found about her today through an interview with Dr. Brighten (above) and my mind was blown. I have never felt so heard! For all things pain or as she puts it uncomfortable/pressure related. If you go to her website you can find the podcasts she's been on and her instagram has a lot of info!

Note that most days, like most people, I don't have a ton of time or energy to cook. So I revert to my easy bowl variations which you can find on my instagram or blog! I'm also all about a good nutrient dense smoothie or smoothie bowl. Today I made one of my favorite afternoon smoothies that really helps satisfy the occasional sweet tooth craving. Check it out below + all the health benefits! :)

Health Benefits:

This smoothie not only helps satisfy that chocolate craving but is packed full of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals! Here are a few health highlights.

  • Chia seeds: Provide an excellent source of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids that have numerous benefits, including glowing skin and mental clarity. Just one ounce of chia seeds is packed with 10g of fiber - WOAH! Its insoluble fiber acts as a prebiotic that feeds friendly gut bacteria and ferments into short-chain fatty acids to support gut health. Chia seeds also contain more protein than most plant foods. And they contain more calcium than milk!

  • Cherries: Full of flavonoids which are antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, and anti‐inflammatory - the darker the cherry the higher concentration of flavonoids! They also found to contain a significant amount of melatonin, making them a good sleeping aid. Full of anti-cancer properties, especially tart cherries which contain perillyl alcohol (POH) which shuts down the growth of cancer by depriving it of the protein it needs to grow. They have been shown to specifically help reduce colon, prostate, breast and ovary cancer as well as prevent attacks of gout.

  • Cacao: Also a great source of flavonoids and polyphenols which is why it's known for its antioxidant benefits. Full of magnesium that helps with hormone balance, digestion and sleep. It also improves insulin sensitivity because it doesn't spike your blood sugar levels.
