First, I want to start by saying that I believe food sources are the best when it comes to getting your vitamin and nutrient intake. After all, food is medicine! However, supplements can help support specific functions and can enhance an already balanced diet when you need that extra boost.
That being said -- as most of you know, I have struggled with a hormone imbalance for most of my adult life and have only in the past couple of years been starting to get it back on track. This is my most recent supplement routine and I'll tell you why!
1. Prenatal Vitamins (nope! I'm not pregnant): Baby & Me Multivitamin - although i have been off birth control for a couple years now - I never dealt with PBCS (Post Birth Control Syndrome) so I am doing it now. I plan on taking this for at least 3 months as it was depleted of many of these vitamins while being on BC for so many years.
2. Adaptagen blend: HPA Adapt by Integrative Therapeutics - I currently have very low testosterone levels and this blend will help with that plus helps manage stress, sleep, and my adrenals.
3. Omega-3's: ProEPA Xtra 1000mg by Nordic Naturals - this is something I recommend most of my clients to take as our bodies do not produce it and we need to get it through diet. It has a variety of health benefits including helping with inflammation, skin, hair, brain and heart hearth. Since it also helps with balancing hormones, it's great for most women especially those who are pregnant and breastfeeding.
4. Evening Primrose: Evening Primrose by Thrive Market - I started seed cycling about a year ago on and off and found it is necessary that I consistently do it as I aim to make my cycles regular. In addition to eating sunflower seeds and sesame seeds day 14-28 of my cycle I take Evening primrose during those days as well. On days 1-13 I eat flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds and take an extra dosage of Omega-3's.
5. Probiotic: FloraMyces by Designs for Health (I like to rotate my probiotics and used MegaSporeBiotic by Microbiome Labs previously which I really like) - again something that I recommend for most of my clients. So many diseases start in the gut and this is the first line of defense.
6. Vitex tincture blend from Baystr Dipensary - this tincture was created by my natropath and is used to increase my progesterone levels, help with spotting, and lengthen my cycle.
Additional supplements that I will use are a B Complex - Active B-Complex by Integrative Therapeutics as B's are the main vitamin depleted from your body while on the pill and because I have low intake B12 intake through foods. Vitamin D - Vitamin D Complex by Designs for Health is another one I take as we don't get a ton of sun exposure in San Francisco and it's great for immune health. Collagen Powder - Collagen Peptides by Vital Proteins is another supplement I add to my tea for digestion health, hair, skin, nails, and bone support.
*The dosage and length of supplement intake will vary per person. Please note that some supplements such as vitex and adaptogens can take up to 3 months to start seeing results. The goal of supplements is to help restore your body to it's best form so that you can eventually do without them.
